A Wissahickon Farm School Girl Remembered
Recently, a 1957 Wissahickon Farm School yearbook was returned to Saul High School. Saul High School was originally the Wissahickon Farm School and also known as "the Farm School." Virginia, known as Jeanne from the class of 1957, was unable to graduate with her class because she needed to help support her household. This was a common story for that era. She later earned her GED, married, and raised a family. Her friend and fellow classmate, Dave Underkofler, gave her the yearbook for her to cherish.
While the alumni association had scanned the 1957 yearbook, a few pages were missing. I have since scanned the missing pages and the program to the below online link. Included in the yearbook package was also the1957 graduation program, a photo of Jeanne, and a heartfelt letter from her grandson Sean, who kindly included his phone number. I called him to thank him and told him a little bit about our school and its rich history. Sadly, Jeanne passed away in January at the age of 86. It was her wish to return the yearbook to the school, as it is an important part of our history.
This story reminds us that Saul’s roots run strong and deep, and that high school memories last a lifetime.
